This interactive workshop will help students--at both undergraduate and graduate levels--engage in research about sexuality and gender in Islamic culture. It will sketch out what is "progressive Islam" and how such a religious-intellectual position allows new approaches to the issues of sex and gender. The workshop can help students to identity and understand the main thinkers in the progressive Islamic movement who take a critical stance toward patriarchy and thus open a space for research and dialogue about issues of sexual orientation and gender identity. Limited space. RSVP to Zahra Jamal at znjamal@uchicago.edu by April 6. Provide your name, discipline, year, and a paragraph describing your research.
