Environmental disasters are increasing in severity and frequency around the globe as the climate changes. While it may appear that disasters impact everyone equally, there are significant inequalities in the way people are prepared for disasters, exposed to disasters, and recover from them. This panel discussion will address issues such as 1) perceptions of climate change and climate justice across different groups, 2) racial, gendered, and classed disaster inequalities (i.e. financial, physical health, mental health), and 3) the concept of resiliency. Panelists: - James R. Elliott, Professor, Sociology, Rice University; - Timothy J. Haney, Professor, Sociology, Mount Royal University; - Fayola Jacobs, Assistant Professor, Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota; and - Fernando I. Rivera, Professor, Sociology, University of Central Florida Moderated by Rebecca Ewert, PhD Candidate, Sociology, University of Chicago Registration is required via link below. If you need assistance to attend, please contact tbrazas@uchicago.edu. Co-sponsored by the University of Chicago Program on Global Environment.
