May 16, 4:00 PM: RE: // Arts Collective Showcase with Collective Artist Talk

Join us for a celebration of the inaugural CSGS Arts Collective! CSGS Arts Collective is a recently formed collective comprising Chase, Evelyn, Kate, Katie, Natalie, and Siri. As a nonhierarchical space for resource-sharing and mutual support, the collective promotes artistic experimentation from undergrads and grads, UChicago and off-campus students, alike. Spanning a broad range of media and disciplines, the collective creates interdisciplinary visual and installation art and advocacy without strictly wedding itself to strict distinctions in form, genre, or content. The collective is an inherently fluid organization, but current members work in a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, artist’s books, collage, and digital illustration. We strive to cultivate a freeing criticality, both in the art we create and within the dynamic of the collective itself. The collective’s inaugural show, “Re : ” takes icons and tropes from different cultural, personal, and historical memories and reconstitutes, collages, and in the case of one work, literally dissolves them. In navigating iconography from the past and present, the works in this show invite contemplation of how such negotiation could work in the future as well.
