Foxy Brown (Jack Hill, 1974) and Four Women (Julie Dash, 1978), with filmmaker Coquie Hughes
Julie Dashâs iconic dance film (based on the song by Nina Simone), followed by the classic Pam Grier Blaxplo film, turn the spotlight on Black womenâs dual experiences of oppression and empowerment as represented in 70s era film. âMaybe you can feel some of what I feel.â
Screenings followed by conversation with Coquie Hughes, Chicago independent filmmaker and producer whose work is known for featuring urban queer women of color. Since 2003, she has earned over 8 million channel views and over 57,000 subscribers on Youtube and her own film site, hercrushtv.com. Hughes is also a playwright and stage director, and founder of imadigitechkid.com, a media & technology arts education program geared towards young children.
