In this workshop we will discuss Julieta Paredes's political manifesto "Hilando Fino desde el Feminismo Comunitario (Finely Spun Threads of Communitarian Feminism)" (see link below to download paper). In this text Paredes offers a critique of neoliberal politics and economics, as well as "Western" feminist theories, and proposes a reformulation of traditional Aymara conceptualizations of gender—codified in the notion of hierarchical complementarity called chacha-warmi—as an alternative for political activism within the context of Latin American colonial legacies. Although it is advisable to read the Spanish-language manifesto in advance, all are welcome to participate. During the first part of the workshop Paredes will present the main ideas of the texts (in English), and this will serve as the point of departure for the conversation. Julieta Paredes is the founder of "Mujeres Creando Comunidad" (Women Creating Community), an indigenous lesbian feminist collective based in La Paz, Bolivia. A theoretician and practitioner of "communitarian feminism," she is one of the most vocal and internationally renowned activists on women's issues in Bolivia and a thoughtful critic of the gender politics fostered under the government of Evo Morales and his ruling party Movimiento al Socialismo (Movement Towards Socialism, MAS). Agnes Lugo-Ortiz (Associate Professor, Latin American Literature) will translate and facilitate the discussion. Lunch will be provided.
